Even though Wiarton Willie saw his shadow and pre- dicted 6 more weeks of winter, let’s ‘Think Spring’ so the time goes by faster. As spring does approach, there are many conferences, symposiums, and professional development days coming. Education is a very important part of our profession and is essential for keeping up with Best Practices. Please remember to check the OSNM web site and the banner on the home page, which shows the educa- tion events coming up. A survey will be coming out soon to help us determine the topics members need see important for ongoing education, knowledge enhancement, as well as educa- tion topics for food services staff. We want to hear from you and, especially, hear how we can help you succeed in your role as a Nutrition Manager. Also, many opportunities are available to help you with the new IDDSI initiative. Our Education Chair, April, has been doing some great networking with educa- tion partners to ensure that our profession gets all the information they need. The board has been working hard to bring new opportunities to enhance your knowledge. The Healthcare Committee has been working with the Ministry Of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC) to increase awareness of the needs of our profession. Topics for ongoing discussion include: Nutrition Managers’ hours; the calcula- tion of Food Service Workers’ (cooks and other staff) legislated hours; qualification of cooks; enhancing the knowledge of qualifi- cation requirements in MOHLTC frontline staff (inspectors); and updating the learning outcomes in the Food Service Worker pro- gram to reflect current practices and use of technology. The increasing diversity of cli- ents has created a greater variety of needs to be met and results in more complex clinical assessments being completed in our facilities. OSNM continues to advocate for you to ensure that nutrition managers and food services staff have the proper ed- ucation and adequate resources to provide services to our Residents. The Bylaws of OSNM are being up- dated and changed and I encourage you to review them in the members’ area of the website. Ask questions, as we will be presenting the Bylaws for approval at the Spring Symposium in April. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Spring Sym- posium. Please watch the website for more information on this event. I would also like all OSNM members to encourage your colleagues (Nutrition Managers and Food Service Supervisors) in the Province of Ontario to become OSNM members. This will help to increase the power of the voice of our provincial chapter, working with CSNM, for the enhancement of our profession nationally and provincially, for making changes to Ontario legislation. Don’t forget that for each colleague who joins OSNM, you will receive a discount from your membership fee. Cheers Judy A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT by Judy Kirby, NM
